The Rise of the Indie Scene: 4 Indonesian Musicians Who Stole the Spotlight
The Indonesian music landscape is becoming more diverse by the day, especially within the Indie genre. The indie movement has been echoing across the archipelago for quite some time, birthing musicians with high-level creativity and undeniable talent. Interestingly, while many indie artists fly under the mainstream radar, they have built powerful, dedicated communities.
To survive and thrive, indie musicians often have to carve out their own "territory." Many take the leap of faith by establishing their own record labels to produce, promote, and distribute their work. Take Raisa, for instance, who paved her way through Juni Records, or Tulus, who initiated TULUS Company alongside his brother.
Looking back at 2017—a golden year for the scene—indie music became the "it" genre for the youth. With poetic yet relatable lyrics and easy-listening melodies, it wasn't hard for people to fall in love. In this article, deCODE highlights four standout indie acts that have truly captured the hearts of Indonesian music lovers.
1. Payung Teduh
In December 2017, Payung Teduh released their highly anticipated album, Ruang Tunggu. This quartet of University of Indonesia (UI) alumni successfully blended Pop, Keroncong, and Jazz into a signature sound that feels like a warm hug.
However, the album's release was met with bittersweet news. The lead vocalist, Is, officially announced his departure from the band that launched his career, effective at the start of 2018.
2. Fourtwnty
Founded by Ari Lesmana, Nuwi, and Roots, Fourtwnty has become a household name for chill vibes. Following their 2014 mini-album Setengah Dulu and their 2015 full-length debut Lelaku, they have continued to expand their musical journey. Their relaxed tones and "comfort-food" melodies have earned them a massive following across Indonesia.
3. White Shoes & The Couples Company (WSATCC)
WSATCC skyrocketed to fame after being featured on the soundtrack for the film Janji Joni. As veterans of the local indie scene, they boast a very distinct retro aesthetic. By embracing a 70s vintage style and maintaining a classic, rhythmic vocal delivery, they offer a nostalgic experience that is uniquely theirs.
4. Mocca
When we talk about indie legends, Mocca is a name that needs no introduction. Fronted by Arina, Riko, Indra, and Toma, this band started from an indie label and transformed into one of the best Swing-influenced acts in the country, even gaining a massive fanbase in Japan. Their English tracks, such as "I Remember," have become timeless anthems.
Their debut album, My Diary (2003), sold over 300,000 copies. Later, in 2008, their album Colours was nominated for Best Cover Design and won the Best Alternative Production Work at the Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) Awards.
